Navigating Change with Mindful Intent: Let’s find balance this Fall Season

Returning from a much-needed vacation, I find myself in a rare state of calm. My body feels lighter, my mind uncluttered — a sensation both unfamiliar and delightful. It struck me that this is the state I aspire to maintain every day. Yet, all too often, I get caught in a whirlwind of tasks, neglecting my mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Is it just me?
Looking back over the past year, and indeed the past few years, I’ve noticed a pattern of relentless busyness. There’s this constant drive for growth and achievement. Growth is essential, yes, but it should be intentional, thoughtful, and aligned with what truly resonates with us. We can’t do it all, nor should we try to. The design community is experiencing significant upheaval. There’s a palpable anxiety, fueled by the rapid advancements in AI and automation. Every day, new articles flood our feeds, offering tips on becoming more efficient, adapting to change, and staying relevant. It’s easy to get caught up in the fear that our skills might become obsolete, that machines might one day replace us.
This article serves as a reminder for all of us feeling overwhelmed by these changes: while it’s crucial to stay informed and evolve, it’s equally important to maintain mindfulness and balance. We can’t let the pressure to constantly improve and compete erode our well-being. Yes, the future of design is uncertain, but this uncertainty also presents opportunities for creativity, innovation, and new ways of thinking.
Here are five practices I plan to embrace this fall, in the hopes of finding a more balanced, mindful approach to work and life:
Letting go of perfection
Mindful consumption of information
Movement is medicine
Changing with the seasons
Reading for the soul
- Letting Go of Perfection
It’s just work. I remind myself that it’s okay not to give 110% all the time. Sometimes, doing your best means simply showing up. This acceptance feels human, and it’s a reminder that life isn’t all about meeting deadlines and achieving goals. There’s value in simply being present and doing what we can, when we can. Book tip: The Perfectionist’s Guide to Losing Control by Katherine Morgan Schafler. - Mindful Consumption of Information
In an age where we’re constantly bombarded with information, it’s crucial to be selective about what we engage with. Clear out what’s no longer relevant to you, whether it’s old emails, outdated resources, or even certain news sources. Practice mindful consumption by choosing content that inspires, educates, and aligns with your values. I’ve cleared out my inbox, archiving only what’s necessary and deleting the rest a lá inbox zero. From now on, any email that doesn’t serve a clear purpose gets swiftly deleted. It’s incredibly freeing. My next challenge is my personal email… But for now, I’m savoring this small victory — a digital declutter that feels surprisingly liberating. - Movement is Medicine
No more long stretches of sitting without a break. I don’t want a watch to remind me when to move; I want to listen to my body and honor its needs. A short walk, some stretching, or even just standing up can refresh my mind and body. It’s about treating myself with kindness and recognizing that these small breaks enhance my productivity, not detract from it. - Changing with the Seasons
As fall arrives, I want to be more present and attuned to the world outside my window. The changing colors, the crisp air — these are moments worth savoring. They remind me that life continues to move forward, regardless of my work schedule. It’s a beautiful, grounding reality check. - Reading for the Soul
I’m making a conscious effort to read more articles that nourish my soul, not just my professional skills. It’s about personal growth, understanding different perspectives, and finding inspiration beyond the confines of work. Or — I might not read at all. Sometimes, it’s better to not take on more information but to reflect on what’s happening inside of you.
